Types and prices
- Full-body massage (massage body) — oil and aroma massage is standard. Downtown District 1 spas charge 200k–700k VND for 60 minutes; upscale spas can top 1 million VND.
- Foot massage (massage chân) — 40–60 minutes, about 330k–500k VND at a mid-range spa. Local shops are cheaper.
- Hot stone (đá nóng) — warm stones placed on the body to loosen muscles. About 530k VND for 60 minutes (at a mid-range District 1 spa).
- Hair-wash spa (gội đầu dưỡng sinh) — you lie down for a hair wash plus a scalp, neck and shoulder massage. The most popular option right now. Neighborhood shops 100k–250k VND, spas 200k–600k VND, Japanese-style head spas 1 million VND+.
- Blind massage (massage người khiếm thị) — given by trained visually impaired therapists. Usually cheaper than regular spas, with no pushy add-on services.
- Vietnamese therapists tend to go hard by default. Say what pressure you want before they start.
Tipping · payment · booking
- Tipping isn't mandatory but is widely expected. 50k–150k VND is typical for a 60–90 minute massage.
- Where the menu says 'Giá đã gồm tip' (tip included), you don't need to tip.
- Give the tip directly to your therapist, not at the counter. Some places use a slip to write the tip amount (tip sheet) or a tip box.
- If you're pressured to tip, give only the amount you originally had in mind. Places near Bến Thành and Bùi Viện have a reputation for pushing hard for tips.
- Payment: many places prefer cash, and cards may carry a 3–8% fee.
- Booking: book well-known spas via Zalo, phone or WhatsApp, or apps like Klook. Always book for weekend evenings. Neighborhood shops take walk-ins.
Places to avoid · things to watch for
- Only use places with a business license and plenty of reviews. On a map app, check that recent reviews (with photos) keep coming in.
- Red flags: closed rooms with no reviews, covered-up windows, touts grabbing you on the street, suspiciously low prices, no menu or price list.
- In Vietnam, prostitution and sexual massage are illegal, and police raids are frequent. If you're on the premises during a raid, customers can be questioned too.
- Avoid places like 'karaoke ôm' or 'massage kích dục', and if you're offered a strange 'extra' service, leave right away.
- Before you start, confirm the price, duration and whether the tip is included. Just ask 'Giá này đã gồm tip chưa?'
- Put valuables like your phone, wallet and passport in a locker and keep the key on you.
- If it hurts, don't put up with it — say 'Đau quá!' right away. If you're pregnant or have a medical condition, tell them before you start.
- Don't buy lots of memberships or multi-session passes at once. There are reviews of spas refusing old memberships after a change of ownership.
- Some shops use names similar to famous spas (e.g. Miu Miu, 137). Go to the address on the spa's official website.
