Which neighborhood?
- Bùi Viện Walking Street (Phạm Ngũ Lão, old District 1) — the loudest and cheapest spot. Sit on plastic stools by the street with draft beer for 20k–50k VND. Open until about 2 AM, some until 4 AM. Shorts and sandals are fine.
- District 1 rooftops around Nguyễn Huệ · Đồng Khởi — rooftop and hotel bars with city views. Cocktails 180k–350k VND, hotel rooftops around 280k–350k VND. Go during happy hour (usually somewhere between 3 and 8 PM) for 30–50% off.
- Thảo Điền (old District 2, now An Khánh ward) — a quiet expat neighborhood of cocktail bars and pubs, clustered on Xuân Thủy and Quốc Hương streets.
- Phạm Viết Chánh Street, Bình Thạnh — an up-and-coming bar strip with sports bars, wine bars and small late-night clubs.
- Phú Mỹ Hưng (old District 7) — a neighborhood with a big Korean community. Calmer than District 1, with neighborhood pubs rather than big clubs. Check the 'Phú Mỹ Hưng (D7)' and Korean-style pocha lists below; for anywhere else, pick by recent reviews on a map app.
Essential safety rules
- Never take your eyes off your drink. Don't accept drinks from strangers, and if you've left your seat, don't finish what was left in your glass.
- If you suddenly feel far too drunk, tell a friend right away.
- Absolutely no drugs. Mere possession or use is punishable, and foreigners are punished the same way. Large-scale drug manufacturing and trafficking can still carry the death penalty (since July 2025, 'transporting' drugs carries life imprisonment instead of death).
- Laughing-gas balloons ('Bóng cười') are banned too. Since January 2025, using or selling nitrous oxide is prohibited. Users are fined; venues that sell it face license revocation and criminal charges. Tourists have even been hospitalized with poisoning after inhaling it.
- Police raids really happen. Clubs and bars are raided often over drugs and laughing gas. If a raid starts, stay calm, cooperate, and always carry a copy of your passport.
- Never drink and drive. Since January 1, 2025, any detectable alcohol in your blood or breath is a violation (Decree 168/2024). On a motorbike it's up to an 8–10 million VND fine + 22–24 months' license suspension; for cars it's even heavier. Same rules for foreigners.
- To get home, book a Grab and check the license plate before you get in.
- Check your bill. Look at menu prices before ordering, and if the bill looks off, ask for an itemized bill (hóa đơn chi tiết). On Bùi Viện, paying for each round as you go is another option.
- For a club table deposit, get the terms (group size, minimum spend, what's included) in writing by message before you pay.
- Don't follow touts shouting club discounts on the street.
- Pickpocketing and phone snatching are common on Bùi Viện. Keep your phone in a front pocket and wear your bag in front of you. See 'Pickpockets · motorbike snatch theft' in ⚠️ HCMC Living Precautions for details.
Cover charge · dress code · opening hours
- Cover charge: regular clubs charge 100k–200k VND (often including one drink).
- Tables: at big clubs the table minimum can be 5–6 million VND or more. Always ask whether it's per person or per table.
- Dress code: rooftops and hotel bars are 'smart casual'. Sleeveless tops, flip-flops and men's shorts above the knee can get you turned away.
- Age: the legal drinking age is 18. Clubs may check ID, so bring a copy of your passport.
- Opening hours: by law, licensed dance clubs can't operate 2 AM–8 AM, and karaoke can't operate midnight–8 AM. Regular bars usually close between midnight and 2 AM.
- Tax: VAT is 8% until the end of 2026. Check whether tax and service charges are added separately on the bill.

'Nhậu' — Vietnamese drinking culture
- Nhậu is the Vietnamese way of drinking: order lots of shared dishes and drink for a long time. It's usually with coworkers or friends after work.
- Bia hơi is cheap, fresh draft beer brewed that day. It's originally a Hanoi thing, so HCMC has dedicated 'Hanoi-style bia hơi' places. You can also order it by the big plastic jug or 2 L bottle.
- When toasting, everyone shouts "Một, hai, ba, dô!" (one, two, three, cheers!).
- A toast usually comes with the expectation of 'bottoms up' (trăm phần trăm, '100 percent'), but if you can't drink, it's fine to smile and just take a sip.
- Beer is usually drunk with ice. Staff keep topping up your ice and beer when your glass is empty, so to stop, say "Đủ rồi" (that's enough).
- Usually one person pays for everything, or the group splits it. Many places charge by the number of empty bottles and cans, so the bottles are often left on the table.
