🏙️ District 1 (Quận 1)
Saigon's government and tourist hub — Independence Palace, Bến Thành Market, international clinics, metro stations
What's the area like?
District 1 is the administrative, business and tourist heart of Saigon. The Opera House, Bến Thành Market, Notre-Dame Cathedral and Independence Palace are all here, along with high-rise offices, hotels and malls, so it's the busiest area for both tourists and office workers.
- New ward names: since 1 July 2025 districts (quận) no longer exist, and the 10 wards of former District 1 were merged into 4 phường.
- phường Sài Gòn — all of former Bến Nghé + parts of Đa Kao and Nguyễn Thái Bình
- phường Bến Thành — all of former Bến Thành and Phạm Ngũ Lão + parts of Cầu Ông Lãnh and Nguyễn Thái Bình
- phường Tân Định — former Tân Định + part of Đa Kao
- phường Cầu Ông Lãnh — former Nguyễn Cư Trinh, Cầu Kho and Cô Giang + part of Cầu Ông Lãnh
- Old names still work: in daily life people still say Quận 1 (District 1), and most Grab drivers understand the old names.
- Main streets: Đồng Khởi (shopping), Nguyễn Huệ (walking street), Lê Lợi, Lê Duẩn (offices, consulates), Hai Bà Trưng, Tôn Đức Thắng (riverside), Bùi Viện and Phạm Ngũ Lão (backpacker area)
- Vibe: prices and rents are among the highest in the city. The main roads feel touristy, but step into the alleys (hẻm) around Tân Định and Cầu Ông Lãnh and you'll find everyday local neighborhoods.
Local tips & warnings
- Motorbike bag snatching is the most common crime. Don't hold your phone out by the roadside, and carry your bag on the side away from traffic.
- Around Bến Thành Market and tourist spots you'll get tourist prices. Ask the price first, compare a few stalls, then bargain.
- Within District 1, Metro Line 1 (Bến Thành · Nhà hát Thành phố · Ba Son) is handy. At rush hour it's often faster than Grab.
- On holiday evenings (Tết, 30/4, 2/9) and around New Year, the Nguyễn Huệ and Lê Lợi area has road closures and gets extremely crowded. Pick a meeting point a bit further away.
- Old addresses (Bến Nghé, Đa Kao, etc.) and new ones (phường Sài Gòn, etc.) are both in use. Use the new phường name on paperwork, and give drivers a building name or landmark.
- Emergency numbers: ambulance 115 · police 113 · fire 114
