What's the area like?

District 11 is an old residential area north of District 5 (Chợ Lớn) and west of District 10. It has a large ethnic-Chinese (người Hoa) community, so you'll see Chinese-character signs and lots of Chinese-style noodle and dumpling shops. It's known for the Đầm Sen amusement park and Phú Thọ Stadium, built on the old racecourse site.

New ward names: from 1 July 2025 districts (quận) were abolished, and the 10 wards of old District 11 were merged into 4 phường.
- phường Bình Thới — old Wards 3 & 10 + part of Ward 8 (Đầm Sen Park side)
- phường Hòa Bình — old Wards 5 & 14 (Lạc Long Quân side)
- phường Minh Phụng — old Wards 1, 7 & 16 (Phụng Sơn Pagoda side, most populous)
- phường Phú Thọ — old Wards 11 & 15 + rest of Ward 8 (Phú Thọ Stadium, Lữ Gia side)
Old names still work: people still say Quận 11 (District 11) all the time, and everyone understands the old names.

Local tips & warnings

District 11's alleys (hẻm) are narrow and maze-like, so it's easy to get lost the first time. Show your Grab driver the exact 'hẻm number + street name' and meet at the alley entrance.
No metro line runs here, so getting around means Grab, taxi or bus.
Đầm Sen Park gets very crowded on weekends, school holidays and public holidays. Weekday mornings are quieter. Ticket prices depend on which gate you buy at.
For a few weeks before Tết, the area around Chợ Thiếc and 3/2 Street gets heavily jammed. Walking or Grab bike is faster then.
With a big ethnic-Chinese community, some older people speak Cantonese or Mandarin. Still, most understand if you speak Vietnamese slowly.
When giving an address, say both the old name 'Quận 11' and the new 'phường Bình Thới / Hòa Bình / Minh Phụng / Phú Thọ' to be safe.

Công viên Văn hóa Đầm Sen (Đầm Sen Park)

A big park with rides, an indoor ice attraction (Băng Đăng), a ship-shaped aquarium and a small zoo, with Đầm Sen Water Park next door.

Weekdays 07:30–18:00, weekends 07:00–18:00 (per sources). Adult day pass about 300k VND (as of Jan 2026) — price depends on the gate you buy at.

Chùa Phụng Sơn (Phụng Sơn Pagoda, Chùa Gò)

Old Buddhist pagoda (national heritage site) · phường Minh Phụng (old Ward 2)

An old pagoda built in the early 19th century and listed as a national heritage site in 1988, known for its old Buddha statues and excavated relics.

Street number is from pre-2025-reform sources. Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees.

Chùa Giác Viên (Giác Viên Pagoda)

Old Buddhist pagoda (national heritage site) · Old District 11, Ward 3 (now around phường Bình Thới)

An old pagoda dating from around 1798, famous for 100-odd Buddha statues and carved wooden screens in the main hall.

Reportedly open 08:00–16:00. It's deep inside an alley and hard to find, so use a map. A national heritage site since 1993, usually presented together with Đình Bình Thới right next door.

Phố sủi cảo Hà Tôn Quyền (Hà Tôn Quyền dumpling street)

Food street (Chinese-Vietnamese food) · Hà Tôn Quyền Street (old District 11 Ward 4, by the District 5 border)

A street of Chinese-style dumpling (sủi cảo) shops since the 1970s, serving fried dumplings, dry dumplings (sủi cảo khô), oyster-sauce dumplings and wonton noodles.

Hours vary by shop. Many stay open late (some until the small hours). Famous shops have long queues in the evening.

Chợ Thiếc (Thiếc Market)

Ancestral-offering & Tết decoration market · Old District 11 (near Trần Quý · Tân Phước streets)

Known as the city's biggest market for offering and Tết goods: incense, candles, votive paper (vàng mã), red couplets and lucky-money envelopes.

Very crowded around the 23rd of the 12th lunar month (Kitchen Gods day). News reports showed big crowds in Jan 2025 too. Stalls spill over onto nearby Trần Quý and Tân Phước streets.
