What's the area like?

District 4 is a small triangle-shaped area just one bridge away from District 1. It's surrounded by the Saigon River, the Bến Nghé canal and the Tẻ canal, and was once the old port (Cảng Sài Gòn · Khánh Hội) area.

New ward names: since 1 July 2025 districts (quận) no longer exist, and the wards of former District 4 were merged into 3 phường.

- phường Khánh Hội — former Wards 8 and 9 + parts of Wards 2, 4 and 15 (Vĩnh Khánh seafood street)
- phường Vĩnh Hội — former Wards 1 and 3 + parts of Wards 2 and 4 (the Bến Vân Đồn riverside facing District 1)
Old names still work: in daily life people still say Quận 4 (District 4), and Grab drivers all understand 'old District 4'.
Main streets: Bến Vân Đồn (riverside/canal-side), Hoàng Diệu, Khánh Hội, Tôn Thất Thuyết, Tôn Đản, Vĩnh Khánh (seafood street), Nguyễn Tất Thành (toward Nhà Rồng Wharf)
Vibe: many high-rise apartments have gone up along the river, attracting people who want to be near District 1 with slightly lower rent. Inside the alleys it still feels like a working-class neighborhood.

Local tips & warnings

There's no metro station (the nearest is Bến Thành Station in District 1). District 4 is linked to District 1 by bridges (Khánh Hội Bridge, Ông Lãnh Bridge, etc.), and traffic backs up at the bridges at rush hour, so allow plenty of time.
Vĩnh Khánh seafood places have dishes sold by weight (kg). Before ordering, ask 'How much per kilo? (Bao nhiêu một ký?)' and check the bill.
At the food streets and night market in the evening, don't leave your phone or wallet on the table. Watch out for motorbike snatchers.
It's a low-lying area surrounded by river and canals, so some streets can flood during heavy rain or high tide. When house-hunting, visit once on a rainy day.

Places to visit

Nhà Rồng Wharf · Ho Chi Minh Museum (Bến Nhà Rồng)

The wharf where Ho Chi Minh left for France in 1911, now the Ho Chi Minh City branch of the Ho Chi Minh Museum, with views of the District 1 skyline across the river.

There were reports of a temporary closure from May to September for renovation, and a large park (Công viên văn hóa Bến Nhà Rồng – Khánh Hội) is under construction nearby (2026 info). Check bennharong.vn before you go to see if it's open.

Mống Bridge (Cầu Mống)

Old steel bridge · Stroll · Bến Vân Đồn (on the District 1 border)

A French-era steel bridge built in 1893–1894, crossing the Bến Nghé canal to link District 1 and District 4.

Sources differ on whether it's pedestrian-only or also open to motorbikes. There were reports of cracks near the stairs, so take care.

Officially designated a food street in 2018 and lined with shellfish and snail (ốc), seafood, BBQ and hotpot places. Ranked 10th in Time Out's 'world's coolest streets 2025'.

Gets busy from around 17:00. If the menu has no prices, always ask before ordering. The famous Ốc Oanh was listed in the 2024 MICHELIN Guide.
