What's the area like?

District 8 is a working-class residential area south of Districts 1 and 5, across the Tàu Hũ canal (kênh Tàu Hũ) and the Đôi canal (kênh Đôi). Prices are low, and Districts 1 and 5 are just a bridge away.

New ward names: since 1 July 2025 districts (quận) no longer exist, and former District 8 became mainly 3 phường.
- phường Chánh Hưng — former Ward 4, Rạch Ông and Hưng Phú + part of Ward 5 (Tạ Quang Bửu and Cao Lỗ side)
- phường Phú Định — former Wards 14 and 15, Xóm Củi + part of Ward 16 (west of Bến Bình Đông)
- phường Bình Đông — former Ward 6, part of Ward 7, the rest of Ward 5 + former An Phú Tây commune of Bình Chánh District (Bình Điền Market side)
- In addition, part of former Ward 16 went to phường Bình Phú (District 6 side) and xã Tân Nhựt, and the rest of former Ward 7 went to xã Bình Hưng.
Old names still work: in daily life people still often say Quận 8 (District 8).

Sights: along the canal, Bến Bình Đông street still has old warehouses and houses, and before Tết a flower market opens where flowers arrive by boat. To the south is Bình Điền Market, Vietnam's largest wholesale market for farm produce and seafood.

Local tips & warnings

District 8 is low-lying, and some streets flood during heavy rain or high tide (triều cường). When house-hunting, always ask 'Mưa có ngập không?' (does it flood when it rains?).
Some canal-side roads are dark at night. Late in the evening use Grab, and don't take your phone out on the street.
The Tết flower market (Bến Bình Đông) is packed in the evenings. It's easier to park your motorbike further away and walk.
Bình Điền wholesale market has heavy truck traffic from night to dawn. If you want to visit, around 4–5 a.m. is safer and there's plenty to see.
When giving an address, say both 'Quận 8' and the new name 'phường Chánh Hưng / Phú Định / Bình Đông' to be sure.

A canal-side road lined with old houses. Before Tết (from roughly the 20th of the 12th lunar month), a 'flower market on boats' opens, with flowers shipped in from the Mekong Delta.

The flower market dates change every year, so check the news before Tết. Ask the sellers' permission before taking photos.

Vietnam's largest wholesale market for farm produce and seafood, covering about 65 ha. Seafood, vegetables and fruit are very cheap.

Busiest from 22:00 to 05:00. Street numbers differ between sources, so map search is the surest way. Watch out for three-wheeled cargo vehicles at the entrance.
