Convenience stores · Neighborhood supermarkets
- Circle K · GS25 · FamilyMart — many open 24 hours. Ready meals, drinks, transit card and phone top-ups.
- WinMart+ · Bách Hóa Xanh — neighborhood supermarkets. Fresh food like vegetables, meat and rice is cheaper than at convenience stores.
- At the checkout they often ask 'Anh có thẻ thành viên không?' (Do you have a membership card?). If not, just say 'Không có'.
- Most take cards and QR transfers. Some small shops are cash only.
Wet markets · How to haggle
Tucked inside the residential streets of Thảo Điền and An Phú are small local wet markets (chợ) and morning street stalls. Vegetables and fruit are cheaper and fresher than at supermarkets.
- Search 'chợ' in a map app to find the nearest market.
- Early morning (6–9 am) is freshest; many stalls close in the afternoon.
- Markets are mostly cash. Bring small notes of 10k–50k VND.
- Haggle only at markets, street stalls and clothing shops. Supermarkets, malls and convenience stores have fixed prices.
- Haggle with a smile — try starting at 70–80% of the first price. If it doesn't work, smile and walk away.
- Touristy Bến Thành Market (chợ Bến Thành) in District 1 is expensive and haggling is a must.
Online shopping
- Shopee · Lazada · TikTok Shop — most household goods are bought here. Delivery within HCMC usually takes 1–3 days.
- GrabMart — items from nearby supermarkets and convenience stores delivered within an hour via the Grab app.
- Pay by card, e-wallet or cash on delivery (COD). Start with COD to be safe.
- Write your delivery address precisely: apartment name + tower (Block/Tháp) + unit number.
- The courier calls when they arrive. Memorize 'Dạ, em xuống liền' (Yes, I'll be right down).
Shopping pitfalls
- Fakes (hàng giả) of popular products are common at markets and online. Buy cosmetics and medicine from official stores or sellers marked 'Mall'.
- You'll need the receipt (hóa đơn) for exchanges and refunds. At big supermarkets, ask about the exchange period at the checkout.
- Losing your mall motorbike parking ticket means a long verification process. Take a photo of it.
