What's the area like?

Thủ Đức is a large area east of the Saigon River. In 2021, old District 2, District 9 and Thủ Đức District merged into 'Thủ Đức City (TP. Thủ Đức)'.

New ward names: on 1 July 2025 district/city-level units were abolished and the area was split into 12 new wards (phường).
- Old District 2 — An Khánh (Thảo Điền, most of An Phú, Thủ Thiêm, An Lợi Đông, An Khánh), Bình Trưng (Bình Trưng Đông/Tây + part of An Phú), Cát Lái (Cát Lái, Thạnh Mỹ Lợi). This is where expat-heavy Thảo Điền and Thủ Thiêm/Sala, being developed as the new financial center, are.
- Old District 9 — Tăng Nhơn Phú (Hiệp Phú, Tân Phú, Tăng Nhơn Phú A/B + part of Long Thạnh Mỹ), Long Bình (Long Bình + rest of Long Thạnh Mỹ — Vinhomes Grand Park, new Miền Đông bus station), Phước Long (Phước Bình, Phước Long A/B), Long Phước, Long Trường (Long Trường, Phú Hữu)
- Old Thủ Đức District — Thủ Đức (Bình Thọ, Linh Chiểu, Trường Thọ etc.), Linh Xuân (Linh Trung, Linh Xuân etc. — the National University university village, near the Hi-Tech Park), Hiệp Bình (Hiệp Bình Chánh/Phước — Gigamall), Tam Bình (Tam Bình, Tam Phú, Bình Chiểu)
Old names still work: in daily life people still say 'Quận 2', 'Quận 9' and 'Thủ Đức'. The An Khánh area of District 2 is covered in detail in the '📍 An Khánh neighborhood' guide.

Local tips & warnings

Old Thủ Đức City is huge. Even D2 ↔ D9 ↔ Thủ Đức takes a while by car, longer at rush hour. When house hunting, pick the side close to your work or school.
Street names have changed. The Saigon Bridge–Thủ Đức intersection stretch of Xa lộ Hà Nội was renamed Võ Nguyên Giáp in 2023. Many places still list the old address, so know both.
New ward names often match old ones (e.g. the new phường Long Bình = old Long Bình + part of Long Thạnh Mỹ). Use the new address on documents and the building or complex name for Grab.
In the rainy season (roughly May–November), parts of Thảo Điền and old District 2 and other low-lying roads often flood. GrabCar is easier on rainy days.

The new town opposite District 1, with views of the D1 skyline across the river and a direct link via Ba Son Bridge (cầu Ba Son).

It's being developed as an international financial center, so there's a lot of construction.

A big theme park of about 150 ha with quirky Buddhist- and legend-themed buildings, rides and a water park with an artificial beach.

07:30–17:00. Adult combo tickets about 255,000–450,000đ (Sep 2026 source). Right in front of the Đại học Quốc gia metro station.

A 36 ha park inside a huge apartment complex, where more than 15 giant 'light trees' glow at night.

Free in-complex bus GRP1 runs 05:00–23:10, about every 10 minutes (Oct 2026 source).
