0-5. Numbers and money — understanding prices
Số đếm & tiền
🎯 Goal Hear numbers from 1 to 1,000,000 and understand prices · about 30 min
Numbers are everyday basics
Vietnamese money (VND, đồng) comes in big units, so you'll use thousand (ngàn) and million (triệu) the most. A cup of coffee is about 30k–60k VND.
In the South, 1,000 is ngàn ('ngang'); in the North it's nghìn ('ngin'). Shops often drop the 'thousand' and just say 'năm mươi' (50) = 50,000 VND.

Money tips and warnings
- The 20,000 and 500,000 VND notes are both bluish and easy to mix up. The 10,000 and 200,000 notes also look similar. Always count the zeros on the note before you hand it over.
- In Vietnam, a dot (.) separates thousands. 50.000 = 50,000 VND. 50k on a price tag also means 50,000 VND.
- Some sellers deliberately give change slowly, or take a big note and claim you gave a small one. Get into the habit of saying the amount as you hand over the note.
