1-6. Time and dates — making plans
Giờ giấc & ngày tháng
🎯 Goal Say times, days and dates, ask opening hours and make appointments · about 30 min
Time is number + giờ
'What time' is number + giờ ('yuh'), minutes are number + phút ('fook'). In the South the gi in giờ is a 'y' sound, so it sounds like 'yuh'.
Parts of the day go after the time:
- sáng morning (until about 11:00)
- trưa midday (11:00–13:00)
- chiều afternoon (13:00–18:00)
- tối evening (18:00 on)
Days of the week are thứ + number. Monday is 'thứ hai' (the second day), and only Sunday is chủ nhật. Dates are said and written day → month → year.

Real conversation — arranging an air-con repair with the landlord
Minsu's landlady, cô Hoa, calls him to set a time for the air-con repairman. She is his parents' age, so Minsu calls himself 'con'.
| Hoa | Alô, Min-su hả? Cô Hoa đây. | Hello, Minsu? It's Ms. Hoa. |
| Minsu | Dạ, chào cô. | Yes, hello. |
| Hoa | Thợ sửa máy lạnh tới được ngày mai. Con rảnh lúc mấy giờ? | The air conditioner repairman can come tomorrow. What time are you free? |

How to read times and dates
- Shop signs write times with 'h', like 8h - 22h. 8h30 = 8:30.
- Dates are day/month/year. 20/10/2026 = 20 October 2026.
- Southerners add nha ('nya') at the end to gently confirm a plan. 'Sáu giờ nha!' = 'Six o'clock, okay?'
Things to watch out for with times and dates
- On contracts and receipts, 05/11 is not May 11 but 5 November. Don't read it month-first.
- Government offices and some banks and small shops close for lunch (about 11:30–13:00). Go early in the morning or in the afternoon.
- During rush hour (roughly 7–9 and 16:30–19:00) traffic is heavy and Grab fares go up. Leave extra time.
- Over the Lunar New Year (Tết) holiday, many shops close for 1–2 weeks. Stock up in advance.
