A Vietnamese number is the key to daily life
You need a Vietnamese number to use Grab, banking apps, delivery apps and Zalo. The biggest carriers are Viettel ('vee-et-tel'), Vinaphone and Mobifone.
The surest way for foreigners is to take your original passport to an official carrier store. From 15 April 2026, registering a new SIM requires face verification (xác thực khuôn mặt). The store takes a photo of your face with a camera.
Zalo is Vietnam's WhatsApp. Landlords, shops, neighbors and even repair technicians almost all use Zalo. Southerners pronounce it closer to 'yah-loh'.

Real conversation — buying a SIM at a Viettel store
Minsu goes to a Viettel store in District 2 with his passport to buy a SIM. Prices are examples.

Getting the most out of Zalo
- You sign up for Zalo with your phone number. Sign up as soon as you get a Vietnamese number.
- Add friends by searching their phone number or scanning their QR code (quét mã). Be sure to add your landlord, building management and shops you use often.
- Sending your location (gửi định vị) to delivery and repair people saves explaining the way.
- Zalo messages are easier with the app's built-in translate feature or a translation app. But always double-check translations for contracts and money.
- It's best not to change the number registered with your bank, Grab and Zalo. Changing it messes up verification.
SIM and Zalo warnings
- Don't buy SIMs registered in someone else's name from street sellers. If the details don't match, the carrier can cut the line. Use an official store that registers the SIM to your passport.
- SIM registration rules change often. From April 2026, face verification is required. Follow the store's instructions.
- Never tell anyone your OTP code. If someone claiming to be from a carrier or bank asks for it, it's a scam.
- If a stranger sends you links, investment offers or 'parcel problems' on Zalo, don't open them.
