4-2. Calling Customer Service ① — Banks and Cards
Gọi tổng đài ngân hàng
🎯 Goal Call a bank's customer service, get through the automated menu to an agent, and handle identity checks, blocking a card, reporting suspicious charges and OTP problems in Vietnamese · about 45 min
Phone calls are harder because you can't see faces
When you call a bank's customer service line (tổng đài), it usually goes like this:
- Automated menu — 'To …, press … (bấm phím …)'. Menu numbers differ by bank.
- Connecting to an agent — the agent (tổng đài viên) answers with 'Dạ, … xin nghe' (Yes, … speaking).
- Identity check (xác minh) — they ask for your name, date of birth, passport number, last digits of your card, etc.
- Handling your request — blocking a card (khóa thẻ), investigating a transaction (tra soát), OTP problems, etc.
- Closing — the agent asks 'Anh/chị còn cần hỗ trợ gì thêm không ạ?' (Is there anything else you need?)
Agents call the customer anh/chị, call themselves em and end sentences with ạ. Answering politely with 'Dạ' yourself makes the conversation go smoothly.

What to prepare before calling customer service
- Your bank's customer service number is on the back of your card and in the bank app. Save it in your phone in case you lose your wallet.
- Many bank apps have a card lock (khóa thẻ) feature. In an emergency, lock the card in the app first, then call — it's faster.
- Before calling, have your passport, registered phone number, last four digits of the card and screenshots of the suspicious-charge texts ready so the identity check goes quickly.
- Say numbers slowly, one digit at a time: 0 không, 1 một, 5 năm, 7 bảy. If the agent talks fast, ask 'Chị nói chậm lại giúp em'.
- Before the call ends, ask for and write down the reference number or processing time: 'Cho em xin mã yêu cầu được không ạ?' (Could I have the request number?)
Beware of bank impersonation scams
- Banks never ask for your OTP, password (mật khẩu) or the CVV on the back of your card by phone or text. If someone asks, it's a scam.
- Hang up on calls saying 'This is the bank / police (công an) — your account is at risk, move your money' or 'install the app from this link'. If in doubt, call back yourself on the number on the back of your card or in the official app.
- Vietnamese bank apps require face verification for transfers above a certain amount (check the threshold in your bank app). Always refuse anyone who asks you to do face verification for them.
- Report suspicious charges as soon as you notice them. If you report late, getting your money back may be hard. Processing times and outcomes differ by bank, so confirm with the agent.
- Blocking a card can also stop automatic payments (subscriptions, app payments, etc.) linked to it. Register them again when your new card arrives.
