4-8. Work Vietnamese Basics — Messages, Meetings and Asking for Help
Tiếng Việt công việc cơ bản
🎯 Goal Write polite work messages, schedule or postpone meetings, give instructions to a housekeeper or driver, and give praise and feedback gently · about 45 min
Polite, and clear
In Vietnam, polite form and clear commitments matter in work-related language.
- Emails and work messages — start with Kính gửi (Dear …) and end with Trân trọng (Sincerely / Respectfully). Zalo messages can be a bit lighter and start with Dạ anh/chị ơi.
- Meetings and schedules — a meeting is a cuộc họp, and postponing is dời lịch. Always xác nhận (confirm) the new schedule.
- People who work in your home — with a housekeeper (người giúp việc) or driver (tài xế), make the hours, tasks and pay clear from the start, praise often and give corrections gently.

Minsu calls Hương, his contact at a client company, to ask to postpone tomorrow's meeting. Hương is older, so Minsu calls her chị and she calls him em.
| Minsu | A lô, chị Hương phải không ạ? Em Minsu đây ạ. | Hello, is this Huong? It's Minsu. |
| Hương | À, chào em. Có chuyện gì vậy em? | Oh, hi. What's up? |
| It's about tomorrow morning's meeting. Sorry, something urgent came up. Could we reschedule? |

| Hương | Thứ Năm chị bận cả buổi chiều rồi. Sáng thứ Sáu được không em? | I'm busy all Thursday afternoon. How about Friday morning? |
| Minsu | Dạ được ạ. Chín giờ sáng thứ Sáu, ở văn phòng bên chị nha chị. | That works. Friday at 9 a.m., at your office. |
| Hương | Ừ. Em nhớ mang theo bản kế hoạch mới nha. | Okay. Remember to bring the new plan. |

Real conversation ② — Agreeing on work and pay with a housekeeper
Jieun, who lives in An Phú, sets the working conditions with Hoa, her new housekeeper. Hoa is older, so Jieun calls her chị and Hoa calls her em. The amounts are examples.
| Jieun | Chị Hoa ơi, mình nói chuyện về công việc một chút nha chị. | Hoa, let's talk about the work for a moment. |
| Hoa | Ừ, em cứ nói đi. | Sure, go ahead. |
| I'd like you to work Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
| Okay. Is the main work cleaning and cooking? |
| Jieun | Dạ. Chị dọn nhà, giặt đồ, nấu bữa tối. Ba giờ rưỡi chị đón bé ở trường giúp em nữa. | Yes. Cleaning, laundry and dinner. And please pick up my kid from school at 3:30. |
| Hoa | Vậy lương tháng em tính sao? | So how much is the monthly pay? |
| I'll pay you nine million a month, with Saturdays and Sundays off. Overtime is paid by the hour. |
| Hoa | Được em. Còn Tết thì sao em? | Okay. And what about Tet? |
| You'll have Tet off, and I'll give you a Tet bonus. Let's put it all in the contract. |
| Hoa | Ừ, vậy là rõ ràng. Có gì em không vừa ý thì cứ nói thẳng với chị nha. | Good, that's clear. If anything isn't to your liking, just tell me directly. |
| Jieun | Dạ. Mà hôm qua chị nấu canh chua ngon lắm, cả nhà em ai cũng khen. | Sure. By the way, your sour soup yesterday was delicious. Everyone loved it. |
| Hoa | Thiệt hả? Vậy mai chị nấu nữa. | Really? Then I'll make it again tomorrow. |

| Hoa | Ừ, chị nhớ rồi. Cảm ơn em đã nói nhẹ nhàng. | Okay, I'll remember. Thanks for saying it so kindly. |
Work message format and tone
Order of a polite email
- First line: Kính gửi anh/chị + name, (for several people: Kính gửi quý anh chị,)
- Body: state the purpose briefly first — Em xin gửi… (I'm sending you …), Em xin phép… (May I …)
- Requests: vui lòng, phiền anh/chị, có thể … được không ạ
- End: Xin cảm ơn anh/chị. → Trân trọng, → your name
Zalo work messages can be a bit lighter: start with Dạ anh/chị ơi, … and add ạ at the end to stay polite.
Praise often and specifically (Chị nấu ăn ngon quá). Give corrections in private, briefly after some praise, phrased as a request like lần sau … giúp em nha (next time, please …).
Things to watch when giving instructions
- When you employ a housekeeper (including a family driver), Vietnam's labor law (Article 162 of the 2019 Labor Code) requires a written contract. From the start, write down and sign the working hours, duties, pay, days off and Tết bonus (thưởng Tết). Use Zalo messages only as a backup record.
- You must not hold on to a worker's original ID card (CCCD). The Labor Code (Article 17) forbids it. If needed, keep only a copy.
- Don't scold anyone loudly in front of others. Face (thể diện) matters in Vietnam, and it often damages the relationship and leads people to quit.
- If you change a meeting by phone, confirm the new date, time and place by message. When things are only agreed verbally, people can remember them differently.
- Pay and working hours vary. First ask neighbors or whoever recommended the person what's typical these days.
